Burning
If you plan to burn leaves or debris, use caution and prepare! Some communities do not allow burning, while others require a burn permit. Check with your local fire department to see if it is allowed and what restrictions apply. Avoid burning on dry days when there has been minimal or no rain. Avoid burning during windy conditions when fires could spread. Before burning, make sure the area surrounding your debris has been soaked so the fire doesn’t spread, and keep a hose or water handy while burning. If possible, use a fire pit or wood stove to do your burning. Do not use gasoline, diesel fuel, or kerosene to start fires! Fire logs are a good way to start and maintain a fire. Keep children and pets away from fires. Do not leave a fire unattended. Drink plenty of water to stay hydrated. Keep debris piles small and add to them as they burn. Keep fires away from overhanging tree branches and utility lines. Wear gloves to protect your hands from the fire and from blisters and splinters. If the fire becomes uncontrollable, call 911 immediately!
