Back to School Safety
Choose a backpack that is ergonomically designed for safety and comfort. Select one that has wide and cushioned straps.
Backpack should weigh no more than 10-20% of child’s weight. Pack the heaviest items towards the back of the backpack, closest to the body.
When lifting a backpack, do not fling it up on the shoulders. Instead, face the backpack and pick it up by lifting with your legs.
Use both straps when wearing the backpack to distribute the weight better. Tighten the straps and use the waist strap (if available). The top of the back pack should be at the top of the shoulders, and the bottom of the pack should fall just below the belt line.
Wear the proper shoes. Heels (including boots) and platform shoes can throw off the spines alignment, making you more unstable when carrying a backpack.
Look for changes in the child’s posture when wearing the backpack.
