Composting is the act of gathering leaves, lawn clippings, tree limbs, leftover food, etc into a pile and allowing the material to decompose. It is more environmentally friendly than burning or sending the material to a landfill. The composted material can be reused as rich soil for gardens. This can save you money in fertilizers.
Compost piles should be close to both your garden and to the waste generation source (kitchen, lawn clippings). Your compost can be in either open bins or in enclosed containers.
Open bins are convenient for collecting rain water and for adding materials to the compost. Disadvantages include the material getting too wet, the compost attract insects, rodents, and bears, the container being an eyesore, and the container being difficult to mix.
Closed containers rarely attract insects or animals and may look more appealing. Compost containers can come in a “rotating” variety that allows the compost to be mixed easier. Rotating drums are also easier to unload and some types have screens to keep large material in. A disadvantage to closed containers is that you may have to add some water to help the material compost. Also, unless your container has a rotating device, the material can be difficult to mix.
